Still working on getting my 550 running. The issue now is that I can only get it into 4 of the gears (3 forward, 1 rev). I was told I probably had a broken spring below the gear shift and how to use a piece of thin material to keep the springs in. This person hadn't done it in years and years and was going on memory. Anyway when I removed the gear shift retainer there was two springs below the shifter and none on top. I just guessing but I belive there should be springs on the top also. Or should the springs be on top. Four springs? Two Spring? HELP Thanks Steve |

Two springs. It sounds to me like you just have one neutral. When you took the shifter out did you notice in which position the center shift rail was in. Actually the 2 springs you are refering to just center the gearshift lever. Each of the rails also has its own detent ball and spring to hold the rail in position. Perhaps we could sent you a picture. |

In the mean time I've down loaded a parts manual from espcor. I see just the 2 springs. I'll have to go home and look at the rails. The boot was tore and maybe some moisture got down in there (was under cover mostly). Maybe the rails are stuck? |

Ok when I took the shifter off and look down in there the center shift rail is toward the rear to the tractor. The real problem is the rust and corrosion on the center rail. I can't get it to move forward. Not looking forward to taking the tranny top off. Any suggestions? Thanks Steve |

Does the center rail even move? Steve |

The center rail is supposed to move back and forth. It seems like if moisture gets through the shift boot, the center rail is the first to set up. You're probably going to have to pull the 3 point off to get it going again. |
