the link below is to a website that has some very good information on power steering. Am thinking of adding a system to my 550. The key is the Char-Lynn valve and sizing the cylinder to the valve, and vice versa. Char-lynn valves are available at places like Motion Industries. They are costly. Also can be had in some equipment junkyards, and on the web at hydraulic surplus places. http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/PR-Hydro_Steering/index2.html |

Jeff: Are you awear that the 550 at one time was equipped with Char-Lynn Steering. Are you thinking booster type steering like the Saginaw units or full hydrostatic power steering?> |

Full hydrostatic. Found a system on a junked out combine that would be capable of handling anything the 550 would see. What is your opinion of what I am contemplating doing? looking for input, honest and thoughtful. |

I've worked all this out about 3 years ago. Saw the idea at Jacksonpowersteering.com, but when contacted, he declined to work out a system for Oliver 550's. So I went to Eaton/char-lynn's website, and downloaded the engineering information for the steering units. I put together an excel spreadsheet that calculates all the values and unit sizing needed. One of these days, I'll add the system to my tractor. But it's been a low priority so far. |
