Hello all,
I am going around to my Oliver sites to get some feedback on my brakes. I have been working on this tractor in my rare spare time and just ready to get it rolling again. I put in all new brake parts. The problem is, that when I put the cover on, I have absolutely no play in the brake pedal. Has any one ever had this problem before? One fellow suggest putting shims in behind the cover. That is goig to big one big shim. This is my first restoration, so my experience is lacking. Any imput will be greatly appreciated.

I've never had that problem on the older olivers but after putting ALL NEW parts on a 4-150 White it took about 5 shims and backing the adjustment bolt out all the way so they didn't drag. 5 shims are over 3/16" thick maybe even a quarter thick.

When we restored Our Super 55, we put new brakes in and came across the same problem you are having. We ended up re-using one old brake disc on each side and one new one on each side. The old one was worn, but not worn out, and this gained us enough extra room to get it all together.

A lot of the bigger Olivers had shim packs for the brake covers, but I haven't seen ones for the Super 55. But making some up may be your best solution.

Thanks fellows. It is good to get a second opinon. I have the old parts and might try installing one disk on each side like Chris mentioned, but later I'll make some shims out of something like a 1/8 brass material. Making it out of shim stock would be difficult and the brass would be mush easier to work with. I'll let get back to the board once I do the change over later today. Oh, on another board some mentioned putting the wheels back on and rocking it to make sure the discs were aligned, but I don't think I could gain enough play doing that. Not much to align.

Super55, good news

Chris, I tried several things. I put in one old disk, I put on the old brake cover, but I was looking at the old disks and they were not much thinner than the news ones. So, I put the new disks back in. This time I loosened off the 3 large bolts that are suppose to be torqued at 32-37 ft-lbs. Then I torque each one and tried turning the hubs. When I torqued the last one. The brake seized without any weight on the actuator. So I loosened it off and torued the bolt to about 25 ft- lbs. Turns freely. So I set the notches on the pedals to the 3rd tooth from the bottom. Adjusted the pedal to where it strated to grabbed. Works perfectly now. Ahhhhh.

Great!!! That backing plate isn't the thickest thing, and I have heard of guys breaking them, so some deflection is quite probable. Glad you figured it out.
