I have a 55, year unknown. How do I find the year it was made, seriel number tags and necessary numbers.

Parts sources and owners/parts manuals may be helpful.

Plans are not so much to restore as to put into good working order.
The air cleaner needs connected to the choke, the choke and carb linkage needs to put in order ( the carb probably needs rebuilt/replaced).

Can power steering be added?

And also, it has no PTO shaft, can that also be added.

I'll problably need help with some hydraulic questions as it has a bucket, but it runs off it's own power source. A shaft runs from an engine pulley, goes under the radiator, to a pump mounted to the front of the tractor. The levers that control the loader are mounted on a tank attached to the loader frame.

Any help with any of the above would be appreciated.

Thanks, John

John,
The serial number tag should be on the left side of the tractor right above the clutch pedal. If you could get the serial number off from that I can tell you what year it is.
A good place for parts is your local AGCO White dealer. You can find the closest one at http://www.agcocorp.com and click on the dealer locator. There are also many aftermarket sources for parts. Many of these are listed on the links page of this site.
The power steering and pto could be added on from a parts tractor. To the best of my knowledge, there are no aftermarket power steering retrofits.
Is just the shaft missing or is there just a cover plate over where a PTO shaft would go? Putting in all of the PTO drive line would take a bit of tear down to get to everything, but it can be done.

The Super 55's were made from 1954 until early 1958. They were then replaced with the 550. Most parts are interchangeable between the two models.

I have a 55,i think its a later model the plate on the engine is missing.
Mine is also a diesel, im just trying to find a good manual,i bought one from tractor supply but it is very vague.
I would like to know how to top the transmission fluid off?
I also need to split the tractor to put a new pto clutch in it.
I'm also interested in finding out about a loader for it.

The transmission fluid is added in the top of the transmission, just below the steering wheel. It is an aluminum spin off cap. To check the level, there is a pipe plug right next to the PTO on the rear of the tractor. Add fluid to the fill hole up front until oil starts to come out of the check hole. I use 80w-90 gear lube in my super 55 and 550.
Splitting the tractor is pretty straight forward. But it helps alot to have a service manual. Go to the links page on this site and click on Floyd County Museum. They have reprints of the original manuals for sale.
Oliver made a few different models of loader that fit the super 55. I'm sure there are lots of aftermarket loaders available too. Were you looking for new or used?

Thanks Chris,
I really thought the ID plate was too corroded to be of use, but after a lot of soap and scrubbing I found: ID No. 1-0008
Serial No. 28-433-518
(Please tell me I have a rare gem worth lots!)

Yes, it does have a plate on the back. (PTO)

Are they all called Super 55? There are no
(reg)55?
Has anyone ever seen the hydraulic power system I have for the bucket?
Does any one out there have a owners/part manual that can be duplicated. I'd cover expenses.

Again, any help is appreciated, John

John,
You have a 1955 super 55. Nothing really rare about it except that it has no PTO. There were no 55's. When this tractor was introduced in 1954, all the other models had been "supered" so they called it the super 55 from the start.

Adding PTO to a super 55 without one would require a parts tractor or parts from one. You would have to split the tractor to get everything in. It's not as bad as it sounds, but I wouldn't try it without a shop manual.

I have seen the hydraulic loader setup you mentioned. It drove off what Oliver called the front PTO. I have seen an Oliver loader that used this setup and we had an aftermarket loader with a front pump on our 550 at one time in it's past.

For manuals, email Mary Ann Townsend at Floyd County Museum. Her address is hpocacc@fiai.net . Tell what manuals you are interested in and she'll be able to help you out. I'm not sure what they charge, but they'll be copies of the originals.
