We have a 1959 880 standard. It jumps out of gear on the "high" side (3,4,6,R2). The shifter doesn't move but the tractor stops and sounds like someone trying to shift gears without clutching. Seems worse under load. 6th gear won't go at all. The other gears (1,2,5,R1) work fine. We have been in it twice and tried some minor repairs that didn't work. The tractor has done this since we got it. I don't know any prior history. I also don't know the type of transmission--it has been a while. Anyboby out there have any ideas or experience with this?

With it being a 1959, it could be the spur gear transmission, or it could be the helical transmission. After looking through the parts book, I may have found your problem. If it is a helical transmission between serial numbers 73639 and 82238, there was a change over for the shift rails. The package number was 104041AS.
It included:
1 of 101768A
1 of 908333
1 of 104034A
2 of 908331
2 of 920156
1 of 104036A
1 of 104037A
1 of 104038A
1 of 1C-1255

There was also package 104042AS which included:
1 of K629
1 OF K1601
1 OF K1602
1 OF 104041AS(the package listed above)

If this has been a problem since the factory, I would be willing to bet your tractor never got this replacement package. Other than that, I would look for loose bearings, nuts and bent/loose shift forks. Hope this helps....

Thanks for info Chris. I can't make myself think that the original owner would let it go and not be updated but anything is possible. Trying to remember what we did to it.
We had a shift fork severly worn so we welded it back up and gound back to original thickness. Also has one gear had some front to back play so we shimmed it so it wouldn't move so much. Neither fix cured the problem. I guess it will require more serious teardown and repair. I am sure those kits are readily available at your local White dealer (ha ha)
