Steve,
You can find the serial number plate on the lower part of the dash. Post the numbers, and I'll let you know what year it is.

Steve,
The Oliver Gang sells a handy OLIVER serial number fan for $3.00 plus $.50 shipping fee. It will probably have your serial number on it.
I mail them out when I receive a paid order.

I think I found the holes where the plate was attached to the dash. The plate appears to be gone. Any other way to find a serial number?

Not that I know of. You can find dates casted into some of the larger parts. Usually there is a date cast in the engine block near the starter. It is usually only 3-4 digits. They only put in the last digit of the year because the Super series was only made in the 1950's. You can also find a date on the bottom of the rear end casting on the under side of it. The front main frame casting also has a date cast in, but it is on the inside near the motor, and is hard to read with out pulling the engine. Most frames I have seen have the date cast in near where the dipstick goes into the engine.
Hope this helps.

now I have another questions. I am getting conflicting indications as to whether I have a super 77 or regular 77 One indication of a super 77 is flat spots on the frame to bolt attachments to. I don't have the flat spots. I have also heard that the hydraulic levers on the Super are quite a bit longer than the regular 77 I have the long levers. any ideas that might tell me for sure which tractor I have? sorry for asking all the questions but I am just curios

Steve,
If your tractor doesn't have the mounting pads with the bolt holes on the front frame it is a Fleetline 77.
In this case you can find the serial number on the right hand side of the tractor on the side of the transmission. (just below the shift lever)
The hydraulic unit could have been replaced by a newer style unit. They are easily interchangeable.
The levers themselves can be switched between some of the units. My 88 has a Super series hydraulic unit on it.
Does your 77 have disc brakes or band brakes?
The band brakes have a pressed steel cover with bolts around the edge. Disc brakes have a cast iron cover with 3 bolts that go through the cover.
If it has band brakes, it is definitely a fleetline 77, made between 1948 and 1951. If it has disc brakes, it is a 52 or 53 model.
There was a conversion kit to convert from band to disc brakes, but I don't think that many trators got this put on them.
Post back what you find out

Thanks for the help !!! I found the brake housing you were talking about. I have the cast iron cover with the three bolts going through it. I found a number stamped on the tranny but I can't match it with anything on the site I went to on the internet. The number is 15574. Maybe I need to look for another number . At least it looks like I am gaining. Thanks again for all your help !!

You folks are aware of Charles City show in June of each year. This is a great show held on the site of the Oliver factory. Sad to stand on the spot where so many great Olivers were built. If you haven't been to show you should come this year. I don't have dates but they should be posted somewhere for you to find. I didn't know that a site like this was on line. I think it is great to see that so many people still keep the older Olivers running I have four that we use in our farming operation. Would like to add one more Dad had a 1951 77 Diesel we traded it off many years ago and I would love to find one to restore. Once again I think this is great.
