I have picked up an older 88 (not sure of the year) I have started to change the transmission fluid and rear end fluid and have run across some questions. When I drained the transmission and rear-end they were full of water. So I drained all the water out and replaced some of the fluid and will redrain to make sure I got all the water. Now here is my question, Does the fill hole for the trans, also fill the the rear-end too? I am assuming that it does and it will need 11 or so gallons of fluid. There is a plug, back by the PTO and I believe that when new fluid runs out of that hole that I have the right amount of fluid. Am I correct or am I starting down the wrong path? |

Chip, You have it right. When the front transmission compartment gets full the oil starts running into the rear end where the final drives are. It is all checked with the one plug by the PTO housing. Check out the rubber shifting boot, that's probably how the water got in there in the first place. |

Chris, Thanks for the affirmation. The shifting boot is where I thought that the water had come from. I'm keeping it covered when I am not using it. Chip |
