What is the best way to make a puller? Can i screw a bolt in and pull that way, or do they come out hard? Do you have to pull really hard. I am new to diesels so I dont want to mess the energy cells up. Any ideas are you have will sure help me out. Thanks again.

A bolt with the right threads, a nut and flat washer would make a good puller. I'll have to check the size and threads on my puller, but here's what you do. Take the outer cap off. There will be a spacer, which should come out with the cap, and then the outer cap of the energy cell. It will have a nipple that you can grab with pliers and pull it out. you may have to remove carbon build up to get it out. Inside will be the other half of the energy cell. You may have to clean it some to see the threads inside of it. You would then take your bolt with nut and flatwasher and screw it into the inner half of the energy cell. Don't crank it too hard. Then run the nut up to the head with the flat washer inbetween. Keep tightening the nut with a wrench and it should pull the inner half out. It shouldn't be too hard to pull out. Some carb cleaner or WD40 might loosen up some of the carbon and make it slide easier. A shop vac comes in handy for removing the carbon without blowing into your engine. Clean everything up really good, lap the cells, and re-install.

Don't make the mistake that others have by removing the injector and using a punch to try to drive out the inner half. This will not only ruin the inner half, but will mushroom it, and then it will never come out. Plus metal chips will be falling into your engine.

If you need more help, just let us know, and glad you enjoy our forum.

Thanks for the info Chris. Any special solvent to clean them up or just use some WD-40? I made a little wooden like pick out of a popsicle stick, I hope this works OK. Did you get a chance to get the thread size? and is it fine or coarse thread? Thanks again, you a a lifesaver. Give yourself a pat on the back for all you do. God bless you !!

Randy, sorry it has taken so long to get back with you. I still haven't gotten around to checking the threads on that puller. Maybe tomorrow, it's supposed to rain here, so the combine will get the day off.

For cleaner, I use ether or carb cleaner. The carb cleaner will work the best though. The penetrating oil helps when pulling because it doesn't evaporate away like the cleaners will.

Thanks for the kind words, they make doing this worth while.

I asked a old Oliver mechanic and he told me they were 3/4 inch and fine thread. So if it isnt raining, keep that combine running, before the snow hits. Thanks

Glad to hear you got the info you needed. After the rain we got today, the combine isn't going to do much for a couple of days.

Chris, Is there any special trick I need to know when putting the energy cells back in. Will they just push in? I need to tap them in? Put all the parts in and screw the cap in?? What is the best way to put them back in? Thanks, Randy

The shop manual says to just put them back in. And to make sure the cap half of the cell is seated squarely against the inner half. If memory serves, once all of the crud and carbon is cleaned up good, they go in pretty easy. One trick that may make it go easier is to put the inner halves of the cells in a really cold freezer. Then stick them in the head while they are cold and the head is room temperature. Should make them fit easier.
