Chris, I talked you to before about a 1650 diesel that was mis-firing. New fuel and filters and a new thermosat made a huge difference. But I hope to get time this weekend to take out the energy cells and clean them. My question is, the shop manual says that the sealing surfaces of the cap and the body need to be re-lapped, by using a figure 8 motion on a lappling plate with fine coumpound. ( I have no idea what this means, can you put that in simple terms for a newbie like me? Thank you for all your help. I really do love this forum and all the help you give.

The 2 halves of the actual engery cell have to be as smooth and flat as possible where they meet. This is to keep them sealed together. The lapping plate would be the same as a whet stone like used for sharpening knives. A knife sharpening kit would work good, as long as the stone is as flat as possible and smooth. By going in a figure 8, it makes for a smoother, flatter surface. You don't want to be too aggressive with them. Only take off enough metal to make the mating surface flat and smooth.

What I've used to lap things in the past was to take a piece of glass, lay it on a stable surface, put a piece of 1000 grit "wet or dry" sandpaper from a body shop (the black colored stuff) and use a real light oil like Marvel Mystery Oil as a lubricant. What I found with the honing stones is that there is usually a groove in the center where they get used most. A piece of glass is about as flat a surface you'll find short of mooching some time on a machine shops granite surface plate.
