Anyone know the intended purpose of the non-adjustable front ends used on Olivers? Seems like they were very popular in Canada, particularly with the cockshutt's. Any idea why? Also, these units have a different hydraulic setup, filter is underneath rear of seat, anything special about that? Lastly, most of these tractors lack 3 point.

Please see the earlier posts about "standard" front ends, and about adding remotes to a 1655. They will show the differences in the front ends, and explain the "depth stop, external valve" hydraulics. My guess is that the prarie farmers in Canada were pulling wide legacy equipmet from before the 3pt era, and saw no need for row crop adjustability.

Dryland farming in western canada used large pull type cultivators / discs and untill last 25 years most areas put in a crop every other year so summerfallow every other year.this was to save moisture for following year crops. Now gone to chemical fallow. Allso used discer seeders which are a one way disc with grain seedbox mounted on top. Rowcrops are something the wife put in the garden!! Therefore no 3point [bareback] Western cabs use a half door in the back of cabs. Pto for trail sprayers and lots of loaders for feeding cattle .Standard axles on the front who needed to adjust ? We have seen a lot come here into southern ontario but not big sellers as they have no three points. few years ago 1650 Diesel no three point 18.4x 34 western cab low hour tractor in consignment sale here brought $1500 [1000us] Was nice! should have bought for feed wagon ! The odd 1850 makes it here also and $3500 dollars for them. There would be the odd row crop tractor for sugar beets in irrigated area but you couldn't give give one away in most of western Canada.

Are these front ends stout? Also, how well do loaders work on them?

I would think that they would make a good loader tractor axle. Fewer parts to come loose than an adjustable front axle. Plus the wheels are almost centered over the king pins in the steering joint, greatly reducing steering effort. Throw in some power steering and the lower center of gravity that the western and standard tractors have, and I would think you would have a pretty good loader tractor. This would make them pretty close to the industrial versions, which were mostly equipped with loaders.
