The lever arms that the throwout bearing pushes to disengage the clutch on our 1750 seem to be too far forward. We recently had the engine overhauled and we re-installed it to find the clutch pedal does not disengage the clutch until it hits the floor. I know we have to pull the engine again, but what adjustments do we need to do to get the pressure plate lever arms set-up correctly? The shop manual is kind of vague about how to do it. Please help. Thanks.

Does your flywheel have a step on it? If the step isn't turned down to the right specs when the flywheel is turned, it would throw things off. Also some clutch covers had spacers between the cover and flywheel. If they are missing, that could be throwing your finger distance off.

Any clutches that I have installed had adjustment instructions that came with them. You can re-adjust the arms by turning the adjusting nut in or out for each arm. Just be sure that all the arms are the same distance from the flywheel or clutch pressure plate cover. Also, stake the nuts to keep them from turning when you are done.

Hi Chris,

You had mentioned in your response on Oct 16 in regards to setting up a pressure plate that any clutch you installed had adjustment instructions. How can we obtain these instructions for a 1750? I do not know the manufacturer of the pressure plate in our tractor, could you give me the name of a typical pressure plate manufacturer that I could get in contact with regarding instructions? Thanks!

When our dealership was still open, we got our remanufactured clutches from BMD Company, through one of their local distributors. Here is a link to a web page with info about BMD.

I would give them a call and see if you can find a distributor near you. There are a couple of styles of pressure plate and disc that can go in the 1750, so instructions will depend on that info. The main 2 styles I can think of right now are button clutches and fiber clutches.

Personally, if the transmission stops turning with the clutch pedal all the way down I wouldn't mess with it.

Hi Chris,

Unfortunately the clutch does not disengage the transmission with the pedal all the way to the floor. That is why the pressure plate lever arms must be way out of adjustment. We plan on pulling the engine in a couple of weeks to adjust it one way or the other. We will probably just mark a throw-out bearing arm position that works and then adjust the lever arms to butt up against the throw-out bearing in that position and put it back together. Thanks for your help, your comments have been very useful. We need to get this baby going for spring planting next year.

A quick fix would be to drill a new hole for the clutch linkage to hook to below the original one. This would give the throw out bearing more travel with the same amount of pedal travel. I've seen this done a a few Olivers with sucess. The main thing to watch out for is that the clutch cover arms do not hit the clutch disc when the pedal is fully depressed.
A previous owned did this with my 1800, and it seems to work pretty good.
