Super 55

I was talking to a fellow at the Penfield show. He has a 1954 gas Super 55. According to my serial number, ser.# 16-011,mine is a 1955 and is a diesel. Mine has the short pto lever. When did they switch to the long lever and do you know how many diesel Super 55s were produced that year? Some fellows say there weren't many. I read the casting on the transmission housing and it was F-2-22-55, I am guessing that means it was cast on February 22, 1955.

According to my service manual, Oliver started using the long PTO lever at serial #16-080. You didn't miss getting the long lever by much. There was a lever change over package offered (part # ESR-1686-A) to put the long lever on, so some early Super 55's may have the long lever now.
I don't have any info on production numbers, so I wouldn't even guess.

That's the way I would read that casting date. Usually there was a couple of months between the casting date and the delivery to the dealer.

I have an oportunity to purchase a Super 55 but know knowthing about the tractor. Does these tractors have live PTO's? What are the things that I should be looking for as far as a problem item(s)?

Yes, the Super 55 has live PTO. Look for looseness in the steering box, and the front axle. Also, the PTO should snap when it is disengaged. It is fairly common for the PTO of this model tractor to turn even when disengaged even though it's not supposed to. Both the PTO and steering are fixable items, but can be pricey to fix. Those 2 items are the main problem areas. Of course, check the oil, try all of the gears, etc. If it has a factory drawbar and external hydraulics, that is defintely a plus.

Any more questions, feel free to ask....
