I just ran accross this message board, so forgive me if this topic has been discussed before.

About five years ago, I bought a new oil filter for my Super 55. I discover than they have been a change in the gasket. The oil filter has about 4 salad dressing jar size male threads. The gasket that used to be supplied was about as thick as a fruit jar lid seal. The new ones are nearly as thick as an individual thread. You cannot get a good seal. I have been using the same gasket for 5 years. (I have tried 3 vendors, including NAPA, Carquest and my local Oliver dealer who carries Argo. All supply the same size gasket.) An e-mail to Argo a few years ago got no response.

Has anyone else seen this problem or does anyone have a solution ?

Thanks

TAA

The thicker gasket is the normal one to have. I have heard of the threads getting worn out in the filter base, preventing a good seal. By using a thinner gasket, you are able to screw the filter in farther, getting more threads to hold everything in place.

I think this problem was caused by the use of cast aluminum to make the filter base for a while. You might try getting another filter base to put on there. Maibachs should have what you need. you can call them at 330-939-4192. They have quite a few salvage tractors.

Chris,

Thanks for the quick reply plus one that actually makes sense to me. It is indeed a cast aluminum base. Which explains the other problem I have. That is, the little tapered metal nipple piece that goes from the middle of the base up into the oil filter sometimes pops off, and at times even gets hung in the filter which makes it necessary for me to destroy the filter to get it out. I have tried various techniques of allowing the base to get hot and cooling the nipple to get it to seal tight and banging it right smartly with a large rubber mallet to get it to seat to no avail. This year I had my machinist neighbor saw off about 1/8 inch thinking it could have been worn at the bottom. It has stayed in so far, but I imagine that a non-aluminum base may solve that problem also. I have already change my oil and filter this spring, so I have time to look around for a base. I am blessed with a shop down from hill from me in Borden Indiana that was an Oliver dealer since the 60's. (Wright Brothers). I will check with the surviving brother (Otis). I believe he may have a salvage 55 at his farm. If not, I am keeping you refrence on file. I use the 55 only occasionally, and that would be a good winter project.

Thanks again for your help.
