Greetings,

I was hoping someone here might be able to help me learn a little more about a particular Oliver. A guy I used to work for had an older Oliver with a blown Detroit Diesel. The paint was pretty faded, but it seemed like the hood had "996" painted on it. Is that really what it its? What else can you tell me about it? I loved running the old gal, cause even though it needed some TLC, that engine would scream! I'd love to buy his, but I don't think his wife would let it go.

Thanks in advance for any help.

There were a few different Oliver model numbers that used the Detriot Diesel.
The Super 99, 990 and 995 used the 3-71 Detroit. They were a 3 cylinder engine, with 71 cubic inches of displacement per cylinder, hence the 3-71 designation. These model came in ag and industrial versions.
The 1900 and 1950 used the 4-53 Detroit Diesel. There were ag and industrial versions of both tractors, plus the industrial 2-115 and 4-115 Mighty-Tow.

If you could send a picture, I can tell you more. A serial number would be a big help too. Meanwhile, go to our photo section and search for the above models by using the search box in the upper right corner of the first page that comes up in the photo gallery.

Chris,

Thanks for the help. I wish I had some pictures of it, because it doesn't look (as I remember) quite like any of the ones in the pictures, although it is definitely closest to the super 99. It had a rounded grille, not the flat type on the 990 and 995. Compunding my problem is that I now live about 6 hours away from where that tractor is, so I can't get any pictures easily. But, I thought I'd try and get some info. Maybe sometime I'll be back over that way and can get a better look at it. However, I do know that the number on the hood was a three digit number, and I swear it was "996." Maybe someone else painted that on there, or maybe my memory is really fading. ;-) Anyway, it was a great tractor, and I would love to rescue it and restore it. Another day....

Thanks again!

By the way, that Detroit in it was definitely a three cylinder. I do know that much for sure!

Could it be that "996" meant "Super 99 number 6"? Was it a green or yellow tractor?
Is there someone you could call to get the serial number off the tractor? It would be on the flywheel cover behind the engine.

It was a green tractor, and it seemed to me the grille was white. It's possible it was repainted, but certainly not recently. I'm afraid I probably can't get the serial number easily. Sort of a long story. ;-) If I get back over that way, I'll be sure to stop in and get some pictures and numbers from it.

Thanks again!
