Hey, has anyone got any info on an Oliver #412 3 point 2 bottom plow? There's one coming up for auction and I wanted to know what it looked like and what options are likely, such as coulter wheels, and replacable shares and shins, etc.

I don't recognize that model. I'll have to do some digging and see what I can find.

Any body else out there have any info?

I did some searching and found some info on a J*hn Deere #412 (ick) 2 bottom plow. Perhaps the add meant a JD plow with Oliver bottoms. Anyways, I am going to drive over and look at it tonight after work, and I'll report back what I find out.

Ok, I went and saw it. It looks a little older than the typical 3242 style plows. Here's a picture of it.

Mark,
I couldn't get your picture to load. Could you email me a copy?

Here's the plow.
oliver412

Something about it doesn't look Oliver to me. The moldboards look more like a JD. I could be wrong, but I don't think it is an Oliver. Plus Oliver tractor plow models followed this system for model numbers.
First digit = 3 = fully mounted plow, such as 3240.
First digit = 4 = pull type plow, such as 4240
First digit = 5 = semi-mount plow, such as 5440
First digit = 6 = rollover plow, such as the 6240.

If it is an Oliver cast iron parts will have part numbers starting with the letters "EP".

I took a picture of the back of the moldboards. It's clearly labelled Oliver in the OLD script. I thought it might have been a JD plow with Oliver bottoms on it, but I don't know if that was ever done. I decided against bidding on it due to the fact that there weren't replacable shins and shares, and the coulters were missing.

My Mom has an old horse drawn 2-bottom plow marked Oliver NO23(E?)B with a Stoddard metal seat marked Dayton Ohio MEG00. It is in fairly good shape. Is this of any worth? How old would it be? Is this Oliver plow the same manufacturer as the Oliver tractors? I am just fishing for information if anyone can reply

Mark, looks like I was wrong. Where was the auction at?

Marty,
I have been told that there was a company named Oliver at one time that sold plows called Oliver, but was no relation to the Oliver Chilled Plow Works in South Bend Indiana. Needless to say, there were some ruffled feathers over this. You could have one of these plows. Or it could be the real thing. Without being able to see it it is hard to tell, as I was able to demonstrate above. It is still worth something as an antique or a yard ornament.

Chris, the auction hasn't happened yet. I did a pre-inspection on it. Lots of antique type stuff there. It's this coming Saturday in Burr Oak, MI, down near Sturgis. Send me an email if you want to know exactly where.

Mark, I know which one you are talking about. If it goes like the one I went to Saturday, there will be lots of deals.

Well, mystery solved. Someone at the auction identified the plow as a JD 412 plow, with Oliver coverboards welded onto it. As far as deals, don't think so. Evidently, that one was advertised far and wide as 'antique tractors auction' and we were hip deep in bidders. I did bid and win on a Ford 2-16 plow, works real nice.
Some prices:
1920's BF Avery restored - $22,000 - going to Jackson, MI
1919 BF Avery restored - $14,000 - going to Ireland
Various wierd makes never heard of... Love? $7,000 - going to Minnesota
Couple real ratty Olivers mostly running - $5000 or so.
Pile of dead Cockshutt - $2000
This was typical. Back issues of Oliver Collector magazine - 2 yrs worth - $75!!!!! I quit bidding on it and lost at $65. I think I recognized him as an Olivergang member....
Anyways, just wanted to clear that up.

wow, and I thought some of the Olivers were exspensive.

Is the plow you bought the other one that shows in the picture above? That one looks like it has an Oliver bottom on it. Oliver did make plows for Ford at one time. Thanks for verifying what the plow was. I feel redeemed now.

Chris, I did buy the plow in the background. I also thought it has Oliver bottoms on it. It's better than nothing. Been looking for an Oliver 2 bottom plow for more than 2 years, and finally couldn't wait anymore. This is the nicest 2-16 I've looked at in that time. Pulls real nice too. Still looking for info on it. I'll keep checking YTMAG.

I have an Oliver 2 bottom, 3 point hitch plow that I can't use. Looks in good shape and original, but I am not an expert. Would be willing to sell or trade for ?. Located in Western Pa.
