Hi.I just bought what I'm told is a 1957 super 55 gas.I love the machine so far even with the problem I'm having. The steering was stuck when I got it and then would only turn right and was a fight to go left.then it would free up with use but when I get back on in morning it is back to square one.Do I have to have steering box rebuilt?

It sure sounds like it. Check out the steering column to make sure it isn't the problem. There might also be water in the steering box that breaks up and melts after using it a while. If this is the case, the steering box should be disassembled to get all of the water out and to clean up any rust inside.

Jim, I had this same problem last summer with my S 55. I tore it apart and only had to replace the top thrust bearing (cone and race) as it was not holding the steering shaft in place. If the wheel moves away from the column as you turn it, this is probably your problem. E-mail me for part #'s

I can't remember all the symptoms mine had but I do remember it kept getting worse and worse as the upper race disintegrated until finally it did not steer at all. Mine also had so much steering wheel play it was not safe in 6th gear. I had never had a steering box apart before and now I know what they mean by 'recirculating ball' steering! Putting in the bearing was not the hardest thing I ever tackled, but I recall having the steering box off and on 3 times before everything was realigned right.
