Chris, YOu mentioned that you went to AGCO for your Super 55 paint so that you could touch up with a spray can. I bought some at my AGCO dealer, Meadow Green.

I forgot to finish the posting.
Is that the correct colour for a Super 55? What is the green called for the 550?

I guess I should start off with that up until a little over 4 years ago, we (The Losey's) were the local AGCO dealer.

We used the meadow green off the shelf for painting all but 2 tractors. One of those 2 was our 60, which had the early dark green, and the other was a 1949 88 row crop, which had the intermedtiate green. It is darker than the meadow green, but lighter than the early dark green.

The AGCO paint was an enamel in 1 gallon cans, and was quite resonably priced compared to getting paint custom mixed. And I think it turned out quite nice too. If you were to add some hardener, you could get even more shine out of it. And since it was all from AGCO, the spray cans matched it to a tee every time. I haven't painted a tractor in a few years, so maybe AGCO isn't doing as good at quality control as they used to. But while we were open, we had one customer that would buy a case of spray cans at a time to paint tractors with. He was a busy person and had little time for his hobby. So when he got a part cleaned up, he didn't want to spend as much time with the paint equipment as he did working on the tractor. He would use the spray can on what he had time for that night. When he was done, you would never have guessed that he painted the whole tractor that way.

I have heard some talk that the Super Series had a different shade of green than the triple digit series. There were a handful of tractors painted a creamy pea green color as a market test. Needless to say, the feedback was poor and they stayed with the meadow green. It is my opinion that the Fleetline series from 1952 on and the Super series used the meadow green color, the same as the triple digit series. Basically, other than that pea green color and variations in paint batches, the color stayed the same from 1952 on.

I think that much of the problem comes from the fact that the green paint tends to darken with dirt and age. And of course, if you use the tractor for years, you don't really notice the paint getting darker, so many people say they were darker than the meadow green is now. When we restored our 60 and painted it that dark green color, my grandfather (who I am quite sure would have been the one to run up to the Oliver branch office in Lansing to pick it up) said that they never painted those 60's that dark. So my dad went down into the parts bins and pulled out an old stock 60 part, and lo and behold, the colors were almost a perfect match.
If you can clean off a greasy area that has paint underneath, or take some buffing compound to an area with a good amount of paint remaining, you'll see that it should come remarkably close to the meadow green.

Thanks Chris. I'm like that fellow that painted his tractor one can at a time. I teach and I don't have a lot of time to work on it so as I clean a part I prime and paint it. It does look good so far. Thanks for all the help.
