We have a 1955 Super 77 that has a different paint design than most others of that series. It has a white grill w/ green rims. People have often questioned whether that is the way it actually came from the factory, however, we have been the only owners of the tractor and have never changed the color design even though it has been repainted. Can anyone answer why the paint design was different from the other tractors in the Super series?

Oliver did not use the clover white paint until 1958.
My guess would be that someone either used white paint on the grille when it was repainted (This was very common, to make the tractor look like the newer ones) or the yellow paint that was used on the grille during the repaint has faded to the point to where it looks white.
If you scratch a bit of paint away, you should find some of the original yellow under the white.

One more possibility is that at some point the grilles were replaced. Oliver would have had replacement sheet metal for quite a few years after the super series was discontinued, but probably wouldn't have gone to the time and exspense of painting them yellow and would have used the white paint they already had in thier paint guns. Plus the 660 grille peices, which were white, are interchangeable with the Super 77. So newer grilles could be on your Super 77 now, but I strongly doubt that it rolled off the line that way.

My uncle repainted grandpa's 66 and 77 and his 88 in the 1960's. All of which have faded to white were they were yellow. The paint used in repaints was just not of the quality used at the factory. I hate to say it, but my uncle used JD brand JD yellow on the 88 and it is the worst for fading. I think that yellow was used as a substitute on a nlot of Olivers.
