What's the proper lube for a 55 tranny? The service manual states 90/140 was used originally, but it should be changed over to 10W-30 engine oil with an Oliver additive. Can you even get this additive anymore? Would something like Hy-tran or Dexron suffice? It gets cold here, I'd prefer something lighter but worry about gear wear with light oils. What to use? |

White Farm Equipment had this chart that told the recommended oils and capacities of many of the Oliver and MM tractors. This would be from some time in the mid-80's, judging from the "WFE" logo at the top. If you can't read the chart, it recommends 20 quarts of SAE 80-90 gear lube for the 550. This should be the same for a Super 55. I use 80W-90 gear lube in my Super 55 and 550 and have no trouble with them. But I also don't use them in the winter. I would think that a universal hydraulic-transmission fluid would be ok. It has all of the right additives for a transmission in it. But in my opinion, the lighter tranny fluids are for pressure lubed transmissions, since they don't stick as well as 80-90. White even changed the recommended tranny fluid to 80-90 in the 2-105, because once the oil was warmed up, they were getting low lube pressures. To the best of my knowledge, the Oliver additive is no longer available. |

This is very confusing. So far the answers are split about 60-40 for 80W-90 fluid yearround. The others are recommending straight 10W-30 motor oil, or Hy-trans fluid. Only other thing I can think of is a mix of 80W-90 and 10W-30 or Hytran to thin it out just a little. I guess I'm gonna have to just wing it. Thanks for your effort, it's appreciated. Mark |
