I have a cast iron Oliver seat and was wondering if anyone had some information on them. It says "Oliver Chilled Plow Works" along the top and "Charles City" underneath, i do believe. My grandpa found it bolted on an old wagon, a homemade invention no doubt. I was wondering where this seat may have come from and what it may be worth. Any help would be appreciated. |

I don't know what it would have come off for sure. Since Oliver and Hart-Parr merged in 1929, the seat would have to be newer than that. (Oliver Chilled Plow Works was located in South Bend Indiana, and Hart-Parr was located in Charles City, Iowa.) It could have been off any number of horse powered implements including sulky plows, manure spreaders, and even wagons. I doubt that it came off a tractor. I have never heard of a seat having both Oliver Chilled Plow works and Charles City cast into it. (That doesn't mean that there's no such thing, just that I haven't seen one in my travels) Average price I have seen for cast seats has been about $150. There are quite a few people that collect the cast seats, so it could be more. Could be less too. You might try searching ebay for cast iron Oliver seats and check out the completed auctions for prices. Beware, there are reproduction ones out there that are worth less (in my honest opinion). |
