Have a chance to buy a 1655 FWA, converted to Cu mmins, Hiniker cab, loader - problem: tranny is locked. You can move the shifter and nothing happens - as soon as you let the clutch out, it stalls. Any ideas what is wrong? Can a 2wd tranny be put on it?

If you're not in 2 gears at the same time, then a bearing is probably set up. You can remove the shifter and see if the notches in the shift rails line up ok. You can use a long rod or screwdriver to shift the rails around and line them up. I've never heard of an over/under locking up, but I suppose it is possible. You could remove the chain from the coupler at the back of the over/under, and see which half can turn to narrow down where the problem is.

If a shaft is seized, then it is going to take a tear-down to fix it. A rear end from a 2wd will bolt right up, and the front axle will switch out as well. If you convert it, I'd be interested in buying the old front axle and rear end.

Must be a shaft - under was already out of action - direct and over still worked. Shifter seems OK. I want to keep it FWA - just can't find a tranny - lots of 2wd parts around.

You can take a 2wd drive tranny and use the gears and shafts out of that, with the exception of the bevel pinion shaft. That is longer on a FWA tractor. The transfer case will bolt up to a 2wd read end, you'll just need to switch out the bevel pinion. If that shaft is ok, then you are just looking at a bunch of labor to swap parts around, as the bevel pinion is the first thing put in when you assemble one of these transmissions.

The good part of this is that the bevel pinion is submerged in oil, so it rarely has a bearing failure. It is most likely the top shaft, with the counter shaft coming in second. Either of these is the same in a 2wd or 4wd.

My first bet would be the low range gear on the top shaft. If the transmission is run low on oil and the tractor is run in any of the gears in high range the gear will weld itself fast to the shaft. You might as well take th cab and the hydraulic unit off and start looking.

Talked to the Oliver dealer.....He agrees probably that one gear on the top shaft - says the easiest fix is to pull the motor and go from the front - any comments? Does anyone have the shaft and gear other than AGCO? ($1300)

Try this one out, www.allpartsstore.com they have the input shaft for the transmission for $226.53 through Family Farm and Home stores. I have never bought from them, but for a grand, I'd be willing to try it.

The engine would definitely have to come out. That would be a good time to fix the over/under.
