Forgive me if these are stupid questions, but Im a noob.
when I read posts about the PTO lever "snapping over", or "snapping in" , is it referring to the point where the lever "feels" like it "goes into gear" and stays there?
If so, should this happen at a certain point in the "arc" of the lever? Currently , mine does this way way back in the arc of the levers movement. Like most of the arc is wasted.
Also, if I hold the pto handle full foward, the PTO stops quickly. If I ease off a bit, it starts turning. Again, I'd say 95% of the levers arc is just slop.
Ive read that the pto constantly turning is normal for these. But mine will stop when full held foward. So I guess thats a good sign.
I believe I'm missing something, that holds the arm in the foward off position. I will try to fabricate something.
One last thing, when depressing the trans clutch, the pto lever moves foward pretty fast. Is that normal?

When engaging the PTO, you'll feel more and more resistance, then all at once it it will get real easy when the clutch goes "over center". It is then fully engaged, but the lever will have some looseness to it as it doesn't hold the clutch engaged, but just activates it. There is no particular point in the arc that it does it, and this can vary some from machine to machine. As long as it goes over-center is the important part.

When you hold the handle forward you are engaging the PTO brake. There should be an adjustable stop bolt down by the right brake housing. When you push the knob on the PTO lever down, it moves a little lever down by that brake housing. That lever should come up against the head of a 3/8 bolt with the PTO off. You can adjust this bolt to hold the lever far enough ahead to keep the PTO brake engaged. I can post a picture of how it's supposed to be if you need to make something up.

If you can make your PTO stop, then yours is doing much better than most of them out there. Turning all the time is common, but I wouldn't call it normal, as a good PTO will stop.

The PTO lever moving forward when you press the main clutch pedal is common as well. One lever pivots on the shaft of the other, and can make them do that. It only seems to happen on tractors that are dry on the inside of the bell housing, which is a good way for them to be. There are some grease zerks on the side of the clutch housing, and some of the shafts have zerks where they go through the housing. Give them a couple shots of grease and see if that helps. Don't over-grease, as the extra can get on the PTO and transmission clutch and cause troubles as well. Both clutches are dry clutches, so any oil or grease will mess them up.
