Ive recently bought a Super 55, my first Oliver.
I was told it was a 56. I looked at the data plate on the side of the tractor, and it is virtually smooth. Not ground down, but you can't make out the numbers.
Are there other numbers that could rope in an exact year?
My second question is about the colors. Currently she has a white grill and white wheels. Ive researched on various sites, and here, and believe that my wheels should be green, not white or red (if it is a 56). Assuming a dealer didn't do it back then. What I can't find, is what color the iron grill guard should be. Anyone have a clue? Thanks alot for any info

Look for a casting date on the engine block, just behind the starter. There will be 3 sets of numbers, one that starts with an L, a 190xxx number that is the Waukesha part number, and one that can be 4-5 digits long, thats the casting date. It reads Month, day, year, and they usually only used the last digit of the year. So for yours, it would be a 6, maybe a 5, as there was about 2-3 months between the casting date and final assembly. There will be another date on the bottom side of the rear end housing. You'll have to crawl under the tractor for that one.

If it is a 1956, then you are right, green wheels. A quick way to narrow it down, if the hydraulic filter points out the left side of the three point unit, it should have green wheels. If the filter faces forward between your legs as you sit on the seat, then it would be a red wheeled Super 55. There other ways to tell, but that one is less likely to have been chaged over the years.

Thanks alot Chris. That is very helpful info!
I rounded up a 2-3-55 code on the block there, going vertical. Feb '55? Looks like she's a '55 lying about her age all these years! The owner probably bought it off the lot in '56, and it became a '56 from then on out.
Also,
Mine has a short, probably 2/3 sized grille guard on the front. I was able to dig up an old photo on the internet, black and white of course, from probably the late 50s, that showed the exact same gaurd I have. I just couldn't tell for sure the color. Sounds nit picky, but I would like to know if it is supposed to be yellow, or green.
Thanks again

That would be right. So yours probably rolled off the assembly line sometime in the early summer of 1955, definitely green wheels.

Sorry I forgot to answer the grille guard question. All the ones that I have seen come from Oliver were painted green like the wheels. I have seen others that usually came with after market loaders, and they were usually yellow, or whatever color the loader was. I'd personally go with green for the grille guard. The grille on the tractor was yellow.
