On my "new" 1650 Industrial (4-78), the backhoe bucket is slow (weak) moving to the right. OK moving to the left. Could there possibly be air in the system that needs bleeding? If so how?

Also which manuals do you suggest that I need?

Any air in the hydraulic system should work its way out on its own after just a few cycles, so I doubt that is it. It could be a bad hose with an internal rupture. It could act like a one-way valve, slowing the flow of oil, and still look fine on the outside. Could also be the control valve.

Which style of swing setup do you have? I think yours should have hydraulic cylinders, where early ones had a large hydra-motor to swing. If you have the hydra-motor style, could be something in there is bad. I hope it isn't that, as I have been told they aren't serviceable anynmore.

Mine has the hydra-motor. I'm really suspecting (hoping) that it is a control valve or linkage problem. I've not had a chance to do any digging with the backhoe yet. I've been really busy moving logs and lumber with the loader. (I own and operate a Woodmizer sawmill.)

Any suggestions on which manuals.

You could try hooking the swing circuit up to one of the other valves, with different hoses. If it still has the problem, then it is the hydra-motor. If the problem goes away, then it is the hoses or the valve.

Sorry about that... I would get an owners manual at the very least. A shop manual is a good one to have as well, but the owners manual will tell you the majority of what you'll need to know to operate and adjust the machine. You can order manuals from the Floyd County Museum. They can be reached at 641-228-1099 M-F, 9-4 central time. Or email them at fchs@fiai.net

The regular manuals don't cover the loader and backhoe. Be sure to ask them for something that covers them as well. A parts manual can come in handy too, as it shows how all of the parts go together in an exploded view. I guess it is a matter of how much you want to spend on manuals, but personally I'd get them all.

Chris, I finally got to check my backhoe swing problem. What I found was wear in the control lever's pivot and the linkage was preventing the valve from completely opening. I now have good swing left and right. I wanted to post this because someone else might have the same problem in the future. Thanks for your help and interest. Lynn
