I've got a Super 77 with the original carb. It was running fine until I put some ethanol gas in it, now it won't start! It will fire with a little bit of ether, so it's not the ignition side. I've taken the carb apart and cleaned all the ports, they all look open. The main gasket fell to pieces so I put it back together without it. It won't even fire. You think it's the gasket? Where can I get just the gasket? How about the float, it acts like it gets too much gas, what's the clearance for the float on that? |

I really doubt ethanol fuel is causing your problem. The missing gasket is definitely a problem. Maibach Tractor can get everything to rebuild your carb. One thing that can cause a cranks but won't start is a battery with a bad cell. When you have a bad cell, the engine will still crank, but the voltage will drop just enough that you won't have spark or it will be weak. Check your points in the distributor. You can test the ethanol content with a 100ml graduated cylinder. Fill the cylinder with 90ml of fuel and 10ml of water. cover the top and shake. The water will combine with the alcohol and sink to the bottom. The gas will set on top. There will be a visible line where the fuel and water meet. At whatever point that is read the number and that is your fuel percentage. I've run into a few cases where cars designed for e-85 had nearly 100% alcohol in them, so it is possible, but unlikely. Check your electrical system first. Most parts stores will test your battery for free. |
