I was trying to determine the age of my Oliver 550 gas tractor. I thought it was a '63 (told it was, actually). After some investigation, I think it was an industrial version since, while it is Oliver green, I find yellow paint underneath. I found the serial number plate which was also painted green and the serial number has these digits on it: 115 187 583. According to the operator manual I have, it indicates that the are also specification numbers which are used to identify equipment with which the tractor was equipped at the time of manufacture. It has a front loader on it and that is the other mystery that I would like solved: original equipment or after market. I think after market. Someone told me it looked like a New Idea loader but wasn't sure. Any help would be appreciated!

i think 9 numbers is too many. 5-6 serial numbers were used to determine the year of the tractor. maybe the last 6 (187 583), which would make it 67' model and likely the fibreglass squared front grill. look for 6 #'s, by the clutch. i'd like to see a picture of the loader cause i too have one for my machine.

I have an oliver that I believe is a 550 but there are no decals left on it, the serial # is
50 331 518 the specification# is 25-0117
It has a loader on it model # 588 and ser.#15026 the serial number plate for the tractor says Oliver corp Charles City Iowa and the plate for the loader says Oliver Corp Chicago Ill. It has power steering and a pto/3 point hook-up, Can any one tell me what I have?

The serial number is 115 187, which would make it a 1961. It should have the steel grille. 583 is the transmission code. Most 550s were code 519, so the 583 code is most likely for an industrial.
