I recently got an OC-46 with the stock loader, and the 4 cylinder gas Hercules engine. I was told it ran years ago and started to have carb issues.... but the guy was 'going to rebuild the carb' and after a few years of sitting on his bench the carb got lost. Fast forward - he gave it to a friend, who sold it to me.

Penetrating oil, gentle persuasion, and a little persistence and I have gotten it to fire briefly. The clutch is still stuck - that's a tomorrow project. I'm still hunting for another carb for it (another story). Still, it is mostly there and in fair shape, and was only a thousand bucks.

Here is the deal. The tranny lever was removed and the hole in the tranny capped to keep water out (the boot was long since gone). When I drop the stick back in, I can go forward by putting it in reverse, and the 4 "forward" gears make it go backwards! I don't see that there is a reverser - there isn't any sheet metal floorboards so I think I would find it if there were. My guess is that either I or the previous tinkerers have pushed something in the tranny around that is reversing the transmission. What did I do? And how do I fix it? It LOOKS like all the notches line up when I put the shift lever in place, and it gives me an honest 1 Fwd 1234 Rev, and shifts easily and clicks in correctly.

Now, this is only from using the starter (remember there still is no real carb and the clutch is still stuck) but I'm turning the engine the same way with the starter, and it does run when spun that direction with fuel going in. A hose off my propane cylinder held under the intake manifold opening is what I was using just to make sure it goes "brpbrpbrpbrp".

Clueless but having fun....

I don't think what your describing is possible in the transmission unless someone installed the steering clutch and ring gear assembly wrong.(ring gear on the wrong side) are you sure it does not have a travel reverser box? It is a relitively small gearbox bolted to the rear of the bell housing, if it is there it could be in reverse and the lever missing.

I've been back and looked around - from what I can see from the back of the clutch housing it goes to a pair of u-joints, and from there into the transmission. I can't find ANY kind of other units. Since this was a project that somebody else was working on - it IS possible that the transmission was taken apart and put together wrong - although not too likely. I'll get the back end off the tranny and look around and see if I can't see what is wrong.

Here is a question. The u-joints coming OUT of the clutch housing and going INTO the transmission turn in the same direction as the motor - so if there is a reverser it has to be inside the transmission. What direction does a "normal" transmission turn? (For clarification, it turns clockwise looking from the front of the machine to the rear).

The travel reverser would be bolted to the clutch housing with a very compact double u-joint between it and the transmission input shaft. The rotation you describe is correct. To my knowledge nothing in the front portion of the transmission can be switched to do what you describe. Remove the rear cover, if my memory is correct the ring gear on the clutch/brake steering assembly should be on the left side of the pinion when you look in from the rear. If it is on the RH side, the steering unit will have to be turned end for end.(note: you have to remove both final drives to do this procedure) If this is is the case and you don't already have a shop manual I suggest you get one from http://www.floydcountymuseum.org/ It will save you money, time, and frustration, Good luck, Harry D.

Well, it's nice to know what the problem is.... I took the back cover off and the ring gear is on the RIGHT side as you look at it from the rear.

I do have a reprint of the shop manual - I'll have to take a look into it to make sure. One question that this answers for me - no reverser that I was missing.

With the ring gear on the wrong side and the forward and reverse like that - it should STILL be usable with one slow forward, and four speeds reverse? Unlike something with a reverser on - where you should not use "reversed reverse"? I'm hoping I can at least get this to where I can drive it onto the trailer, and push one downed tree off my driveway before I take the time to take it all apart and flip that over?
