My Super 77 diesel emits a black exhaust most of the time, load or no load, hot or cold. The engine seems to be in good shape and uses no oil. Is there an easy explanation for this exhaust condition, and is there an easy solution for correcting it?

jim, this is a fuel problem.changing filters is first. can be an injector problem also can be a pump problem. you may need the assistance of a professional

Well What have you done to solve the problem? When is the last time you cleaned the air cleaner? Have you unhooked the hose from the air cleaner? What are you using for fuel? Have you taken the exhaust manifold off to see if all 6 cylinders smoke the same? What are you using for fuel? How does it start? Get back with us.

Cordell, John,
Thanks for your advice. The engine starts and runs well. As I said, it does not use oil. Except for changing oil and oil filters, not much has been done to the engine for 30 years. I will start by changing the fuel filters as Cordell suggests. What is the next step? Can the injectors be ovrhauled, or do they need to be replaced? I am not a professional mechanic, but I did successfully install an O ring kit in the high pressure fuel pump. I would like to do as much work on the tractor as I can, but don't want to screw it up.

Well I have some questions; When you put the O-ring kit in, did you take the pump off the tractor or was it done on the tractor. I will also send you an e-mail

John,

I should have made this clear. The engine smoked way before I put in the O ring kit. I put in the O ring kit because of a fuel leak from the pump. It fixed the leak very nicely. The engine runs the same and smokes the same as it did before my work on the pump. But to answer your question, I did not take the pump off the tractor.
Thanks much.
