The PTO was supposably rebuilt. But has not worked since. It seems not to be engaging. I'm just trying to get some pointers. I have a I&T manual but need more info. I have never been around Olivers, but they seem to be good tractors.

When you pull the lever back to engage, does it snap in? You may need to adjust the clutch discs. The IT manual has the procedure for adjusting the clutch. However, depending on the year tractor there are different clutch configurations. If you have the 26 inch handle with 5 discs you need 32 pounds of pressure two feet above the pivot point, or 45 pounds for the 6 disc clutch. If you have the earlier Super 55 with the 16 inch lever you 50 pounds at teh upper end of the lever for 5 discs, and 67 1/2 pounds for a 6 disc clutch.

I have the longer handle. I think I have the 5 disc. I have not been inside the tractor. By what I have been told and the owners manual the tractor is a 57 model. What is the best way to measure the pull on the handle? Where is a good place for parts? The PTO is the big problem, but I have some small things I would like to fix.The seat has a rubber like spring that not working.

Tim, check out your IT it will show you where the inspeciton plate is. I have a small pocket fish scale that I use to measure the pull. Any spring scale will work. Meaure two feet up from the pivot point, attach a wire to hook the scale to and check the pounds of pull. The seat rubbers can be found from Korves Bros as well as several other parts. AGCO dealers can still get parts too.

I will be out of town for a while so if you don't get any help on this board go to YTMag.com and the Oliver discussion page.

Well, at least you know what you have to do. The tractor is real easy to split. Korves will have the parts for you.

took this off of the YT Mag Oliver board:

Folks, my brother taught me to block up and around the rear of the oil pan to the rails holding the engine to lift using a hydraulic jack, wedge the front axle, chock the front tires, etc. then put the floor jack (with wheels) under the transmission area of the rear section of the 550 tractor when splitting the tractor. In other words move the rear of the tractor away from the front. Advantage - bigger rear wheels with cleats on the tires can be easier to move. That's the way I've split mine to work on the clutches, but I'm relatively new to such.

I highly suggest you get a manual, at least the I & T manual or the CD version of the big manual. You can get the CD from ebay.
