Hello all,

I rencently have become somewhat involved with some Oliver Super 77 tractors.

First one is for sale and I am considering buying. it is in very good shaper overall with a rebuild on the engine about 6 years ago. one new rear tire and fronts are in good shape. no 3pt or PS. just a pretty much standard tractor. The guy is asking $2000. Is this about in line? I will be using it for hay mowing and baling. It has a NF and I need to get a WF for it as I have some hilly terain to cover... are those avaliable still?

Second item a friend has a super 77 that will no longer start. i am much more familiar with IH tractors. TO me it sounds like the bendix on the starter is not engaging. the owners dad claims that there is a bad spot on the flywheel and he said the flywheel needs turned around.

how hard of a job is it to do the flywheel flip so to speak?

I imagine I will be helping with the work. Maybe its just the starter though. it cranks easily anyway. just doesn't engage as it should.

thanks for your help.

If you want a WF tractor, buy one. Conversion is $$$.

Pull the starter and bench test it. If the Bendix is engaging it will be obvious. If not, replace it or buy a rebuilt starter. If the Bendix is OK, look at the flywheel teeth. If they are missing or rounded off you need a new flywheel; turning the flywheel around accomplishes nothing. Replacing the flywheel is a bit or work. You'll want a service manual, at least.

Bubba hit it pretty much right on the head. Switching to a wide front isn't very hard, but good wide fronts bring around $500 or more, so you can get some money into the change over. Also, flipping the flywheel is an automotive trick that might work with an automatic transmission, but not with an Oliver. The flywheel is totally different on each side. The ring gear on the flywheel can be replaced seperately.
