I've got a 1969 Oliver-White 1650 Industrial loader/backhoe, 4 wheel drive, with a hydrostatic type transmission. (Foot pedals for forward and reverse, and 6 speeds to choose.) I've never turned a wrench on a tractor... but I've rebuilt a couple V8 engines.... The reverse works perfectly, and the forward works fine cold, but after a 1/2 hour to 45 min. of work, it stops going forward easily. It will go forward, but you have to give a lot of gas.... feels like a clutch is slipping. How big of a job is this to fix? Can a novice like me do it? What manual do I need, what parts are bad, and where can I buy them? Any help here is appreciated. I would like to sell this machine, and want to fix this first. The problem arose while working yesterday.... well, it became much worse than it has been anyway.

Thanks,
Mike

Sounds like your Reverse-O-Torque is going bad. Rebuilt units are near impossible to find and the engine must come out to replace it. Many years ago a neighbor was told by AGCO that it would be $5,000-$6,000 to fix, parts and labor, if they could locate a unit. He parted out the tractor instead.

A local guy had the same loader as you, but on his he removed the hoe, added all the wheel weights he could and a box of rocks on the back for more weight. Uses it for loading lime, anyways he had about $6500 in a complete rebuild, he paid the local dealer to do it, so how much of that was labor I don't know. I wouldn't think it would be that difficult, probaly not a lot differant than the reverser unit on our John Deere backhoe. One forward clutch pack and one for reverse. Chris Losey would be the one to contact on this one I think.

The Revers O Torques units wer built by Funk. Funk also had service centers for the industrial transmissions they sold. Funk also made other gear boxes and still does. Funk was sold like many other companies and is under the John Deere company umbrella now. Some John deere equipmen as well as Agco uses a Funk Power shift unit in there equipment today.

John; I'm not positive but I thought the later Reverse-o-torque units used on the 1650's were built by Borg-Warner ( planetary type)and Funks were used on the older tractors, should be able to tell from parts books, which I don't have.
Straighten me out and have a good day.

I have a 1964 1600 Industrial Loader Backhoe with Reverse O Torque and I had the same problem - sudden failure going forward but the tractor would still go in reverse. In my case there was a hydraulic fluid leak and after I repaired the leak and filled the reservoir everything was ok. Sometimes it pays to check the simple things first.

I wish I could help out, but I've never had to work on a reverse-O-torq. I would try the fluids and filters thing before I spent money on a tear-down.
