I have an Oliver 1600 Industrial loader backhoe gas that I am restoring. It is a 2WD model. I am wondering if this can be upgraded to a FWA. Is the front drive assembly the same for the Ag tractor and the Industrial version? Any idea on where I can find the parts? I am located in eastern Pennsylvania.

It could be upgraded to 4WD, but it is probably going to be alot of work. You'll need to tear the transmission down so that you can put in the longer 4WD pinion shaft. Of course, that is after you have found a 4WD pinion shaft. Just about every part needs to come out of the rear end in order to change the pinion shaft.

There is a chance that you could have a 2WD unit with the longer 4WD pinion shaft. If you do, the cover on the pinion shaft (it can be found by looking up through the hole where the rear main frame meets the front main frame. If the cover on the bottom shaft in the tranny sticks out 3-4 inches, then you probably have the long shaft. If it is a steel cover less than an inch thick, you've got the 2WD shaft.

From there, all you need is a front axle and transfer case. That part is easy, as it bolts up the same as a 2WD front axle. and the bolt holes should already be there to mount the transfer case. You'll need to check the gear ratio in the front axle and rear end to figure out what size of tires you'll need to match the ground speed of the front and rear wheels.

I found this page recently,
http://www.samstractor.com/salvage.html
it has contact info for salvage yards around the US.

Chris, we checked our Industrial 1600 and it appears to have the long pinion shaft. Which Oliver models used the same FWA front axle assembly?

If you have the long cover, I would slide it off some and look to see if the long shaft is under there. I have heard of a few Olivers having the long shaft cover, but only the regular shaft under there. I'd hate for you to buy a bunch of parts from what I said and find out I was wrong. The long shaft will have a nut by the tranny, and then some splines that drive nothing at this time.

Having said that, the mechanical powered front axle from a 1600, 1650, 1655, 1750, 1755, 1800, 1850, 1855, 1900, 1950, 1950-T, 1955, White 2-70, 2-85, 2-88, 2-105 and 2-110 are all basically the same unit with the same mounting brackets. The only real difference you will find is the gear ratio, which will be stamped on the differential carrier. It will change what tire sizes you will need to use on the rear of the tractor to get the ground speeds to match up.

The transfer case is going to be a little tougher than I thought. The only one that will work has to be from a 1600, 1650, 1655, or White 2-70. The transfer case is different for these smaller tractors than it is for the rest of them. The 4-78 industrial Oliver is the same as well. I would start looking for that transfer case, because it looks like an axle is going to be much easier to find, and where there is a transfer case, there is usually an axle.

Good luck, and keep us posted on how it goes.
