My super 55 started smoking A LOT last week! Lots of white/grayish smoke. It is heaviest when going from idle to full power - it really blows out a thick cloud! We have checked the rings, all compressions are 155-160 PSI, the valves are not leaking (poured fuel behind the valvew with the head off and no leaks through the valve seats. WE intalled a new head gasket and double checked that it was correct. The smoke started after running about 30-45 minutes. I had previously run the tractor 25-30 hours with no smoke. It has approx 40 hours since overhaul. I did not get it hot and there is no fuel contamination. We ran the first 1/3 of this tank of fuel with no problems.

any Suggestions? Thanks.

Bruce

Well you are probably not going to like my suggestions at all!. First of all answer me these questions> It is gas or diesel? Did you put in new sleeves and pistons or just a ring set? How did you break it in? With the compression you have it is aparent that your valves were not leaking to start with. Now I have some ideas, but before I make any uneducated guess I would like to have you answr my questions> Fair enough?

More than fair. It is gas. Just new rings, no pistons or sleeves. I didn't break it in. I bought it with roughly 10 hours after the overhaul and ran it antoher 30 or so with no smoking at all.

Now we are starting to get somewhere. First of all how long did you let it idle before you went to full power and what were you pulling? Second thing since you purchased it with 10 hours on an overhaul can you find out the following information. What kind of ring set was used as far as ring material (cast or crome ) or the manufacture and part number of the ring set. Next while you are looking did you inspect the condition of the aircleaner to carburetor hose? Are you pulling oil out of the aircleaner cup. Do you have a vacuum gauge and have you checked the vacuum on the engine? What was done to the cylinder head? new guides. valves, exhaust seats and what type of valve seal was installed. Start there. When I taught ag mechanics 25 years ago I used to show them an old Perfect Circle film called the case of the slippery oil. Your questions and actions remind me a lot of the young man in the film. Have a happy easter!

Wans't able to get the rng info. As far as warm up, ran it just a few minutes and pulled an 7 foot disk and 5 foot bush hog. Not pulling oil from the filter. Not shure what was replaced in the top end but we just replaced the valve seals. That seemed to of helped. I'm going to run it for several hours today and see what happens. Just check comressions and they are all 120-125 cold (after about 2 minutes of running). Thanks for your help.
